Inkjet Printers FAQs

What is printer steganography?

Steganography is the practice of embedding a secret message within another message. It’s different from encryption in that the message is hiding in plain sight, so to speak.  In terms of printers, printer manufacturers decided to place microdots on every sheet printed by their printers starting in the early 1990’s. The dots identify the manufacturer, serial number for the printer, and other information that can help track down who the printer belongs to.

What is lithography?

Lithography is the printing technique that uses two solutions on a flat surface to create a print. One is a hydrophilic solution, and the other a hydrophobic one. This allows a flat surface to hold the print when introduced to an aqueous solution. In turn, a much longer print run can be used because there is no raised surface to wear down with repeated use. It is one of the preferred industrial printing methods both because of its ability to hold great detail and its durability.

What should I look for in a printer?

The thing most people don’t look for when printer shopping is how much replacement ink will cost them. The printing market is much like the personal razor market. You buy the printer (razor) for a relatively low price. The company makes their money by selling you razor blades (replacement ink cartridges). So when you shop for a printer, see what your long term costs are going to be like, odds are it will significantly affect your decision.
